Despite an agreement in January to work towards a ceasefire, Israel’s renewed military onslaught has killed over 2,500 civilians, shattering an already fragile ceasefire. Palestinians are being bombed and starved as Israel has blocked all aid into Gaza since 2nd March and cut off electricity. This blatant act of collective punishment is only made possible because the UK and other allies have repeatedly failed to hold Israel accountable for clear violations of international law. Israel’s crimes against the Palestinian people have always been made possible because of the impunity they enjoy, and there will be no end to Palestinian suffering without an end to this devastating cycle of impunity.
A Humanitarian Catastrophe
For nearly 18 months, Israel’s relentless bombardment and siege have killed over 52,000 Palestinians and injured more than 118,000. The humanitarian conditions in Gaza have reached catastrophic levels:
90% of Gaza's population faces extreme food shortages, with famine looming due to Israel's blockade on humanitarian aid
Nearly 1.9m people have been forcibly displaced, repeatedly
The majority of hospitals have been destroyed or rendered inoperable, leaving millions without medical care
Deliberate attacks on Gaza's water infrastructure leaving millions without access to clean water
Palestinians have been systematically starved, forcibly displaced under threat of gunfire and airstrikes, and deliberately targeted while sheltering in schools and hospitals. They have been stripped of everything they need to survive.
The Role Of Impunity In Enabling Israel's Atrocities And The UK's Complicity
Despite overwhelming evidence of atrocity crimes, the UK government has not only failed to take adequate action - but it has also enabled these crimes by supplying arms and military equipment, provided diplomatic cover and obstructed ceasefire efforts at the UN. By withholding meaningful pressure, the UK has helped create a permissive environment in which Israeli actions continue unchecked.
As an ally of Israel and permanent member of the UN Security Council, the UK bears special responsibility. Continued diplomatic platitudes are insufficient. The UK must end all arms sales, impose sanctions on those responsible for war crimes, and demand a permanent ceasefire and unrestricted aid access.
Gaza’s destruction is systematic, aiming to render it uninhabitable. By refusing to confront these crimes, the UK aids their continuation. True commitment to international law requires action, not rhetoric. Without accountability, peace is impossible. The UK must end its complicity by leading efforts to enforce international law and end the impunity that sustains Israel’s violations. Only then can a just resolution be achieved.
