Famine is taking hold across Gaza, with dozens dying from malnutrition. The first case of polio has been confirmed in Gaza in 25 years – in a 10-month-old baby, who is now partially paralysed. 63% of buildings have been damaged or destroyed. The amount of food, shelter, fuel, medicine and other vital aid getting into Gaza is a tiny drop in the ocean compared to what’s needed. Israel’s constant bombardment and strangling siege is directly depriving people of everything they need to survive.
The UK Government’s suspension of 30 out of 350 arms licenses is an overdue recognition of the clear risk that Israel is using UK arms to violate international law in Gaza. But it does not go far enough.
The UK must immediately end ALL arms sales to Israel and stop being complicit in clear violations of international law.
Importantly, the partial suspension excludes the 15% of parts for F-35 jets which have been used in attacks on civilians in Gaza. The UK government has a responsibility to do everything in its power to uphold International Humanitarian Law, and we have a responsibility to ensure that arms we provide are not being used to commit war crimes.
Right now, the UK is complicit in serious violations of international law.
The International Court of Justice rulings are legally binding, but they have been ignored by Israel, and the situation for Palestinians has become even worse.
We need the UK Government to immediately end ALL arms sales now. The people of Gaza cannot wait any longer.
